Nimbus Architecture and Heritage was engaged to provide architectural and heritage consultancy services for the Deniliquin Courthouse, a locally listed heritage item located adjacent to the State listed St Andrew’s Uniting Church. The project involved designing a safe, functional and heritage sensitive physical barrier to the Person in Custody Dock within the main courtroom, improving security, accessibility and overall user experience for the community. As the works were confined to the courtroom interior, no assessment of impacts to the adjacent State-listed church was required. NAH undertook detailed due diligence, including a review of existing documentation, relevant planning controls and NSW Heritage Branch guidelines, supported by an on site inspection and stakeholder briefing. This engagement ensured the proposed intervention responded to operational needs, community expectations and heritage values. Two sketch design options were developed, each accompanied by an assessment of potential heritage impacts. Following client review, the preferred option was architecturally documented, with structural coordination undertaken. Heritage services included design advice and preparation of draft and final Statements of Heritage Impact, submitted for approval under the REF process. The outcome delivered a compliant, safe and community focused solution that respected the courthouse’s heritage significance.
