Previously affected by flooding and significant deterioration, the Grafton Rowing Club required a comprehensive redevelopment to ensure its long-term resilience and continued contribution to community life. The project represents a major transformation of the two-storey clubhouse, responding directly to the site’s flood context and its prominent position between Memorial Park and the Clarence River in the heart of Grafton. The building is conceived in two complementary parts: a robust base designed to withstand flood below the levee, and a light filled upper level that opens to expansive river views. The upper deck has been intentionally designed as a gift from the Rowing Club to the wider community – a welcoming public viewing platform and café that invites locals and visitors to experience the river, enjoy the landscape and engage with club activity. The first stage has delivered the upper spectator deck, café, function rooms, entry foyer, lift and an upgraded boat store that improves safety and day to day operations. The final stage will provide a gym, muster area, offices, amenities, commercial kitchen, club deck and expanded boat storage with direct river access. Staged delivery enables the club to activate the upgraded facility now while planning for future growth.
