Nimbus Architecture and Heritage was engaged to provide specialist heritage advice and technical support for the assessment and rectification of severe white ant damage at the heritage listed Bellingen Courthouse. The project focused on safeguarding significant fabric, improving long term building performance and supporting the courthouse’s continued role as a valued civic and community asset. Our due diligence process included a detailed review of existing drawings and reports, followed by an on site inspection with the structural engineer and builder. Targeted investigations of stormwater connection points and discharge to the kerb and gutter were undertaken, recognising that moisture and inadequate ventilation are major contributors to termite activity. This ecological understanding informed both the conservation strategy and sustainable remediation recommendations. We prepared marked up architectural drawings identifying the location and extent of termite damage, including impacts on original significant fabric, and produced a comprehensive heritage statement outlining damage severity, conservation considerations and recommended pathways forward. NAH subsequently provided detailed architectural and heritage documentation for the repair and rectification works and supported the construction phase through timely responses to RFIs, ensuring heritage integrity and community benefit were upheld throughout delivery.
