Our recent work with the Blue Mountains City Council has included the development of concept designs for the Katoomba Civic Centre Arcade, which will soon progress to the detailed design phase. This project overlays the public sphere with an arcade setting and introduces an innovative architectural ‘adaptive re-use’ response to the existing building stock. The design incorporates a stage for use during community events, outdoor viewing platform, outdoor public seating, sculptural art elements, and shared work-hub spaces. The Katoomba Civic Centre Arcade design acknowledges the rich history of the Katoomba area, which is populated with buildings from ca. 1910-1940s. The design respects the existing heritage elements, for example celebrating the shared southern masonry wall of the heritage listed ‘Former Embassy Theatre’ as an art/performance backdrop. Our heritage team produced a streetscape analysis report and Statement of Heritage Impact (SoHI) to accompany the concept design drawings and artists impressions.
